Indiana University Bloomington and Purdue University Collaborations in Life Sciences and Informatics Research

Collaborators:

Stanton Gelvin (PU-Biological Sciences) and William Fuqua (IU-Biology)
Title of Project:

Agrobacterium Biofilms and Gene Transfer to Plants

Agrobacterium is a major source of plant disease, while also serving as the primary vector that molecular biologists use for genetic transformation of plants. The proposed collaboration is natural in that one of the investigators focuses on the plant side of the interaction and the other on the bacterial side.

Collaborators:

Olga Vitek (PU-Statistics and Computer Science) and Predrag Radivojac (IU-Informatics)
Title of Project:

A Hypothesis Testing Approach to Identification and Assessment of Statistical Significance of Peptides and Proteins in Shotgun Proteomics

The investigators will apply additional statistical measures to improve identification of peptides and proteins in complex mixtures using mass spectrometry. The proposed project will foster collaborations between two new faculty members at IU and Purdue.

Collaborators:

Bogdan Dragnea (IU-Chemistry) Lia Stanciu (PU-Materials Engineering)
Title of Project:

Structure of Virus Like Particles by Cyro-Electron Microscopy

This proposed collaboration will make use of cryo-electron microscopy performed by Prof. Lia Stanciu at Purdue to demonstrate that virus-like-particles formed by the assembly of the brome mosaic virus coat proteins on gold nanoparticles show a close resemblance to the structures of actual viruses. This is a technically cutting-edge proposal for a project that might have some very practical outcomes.
