The Center for Toxicology is housed in the School of Medicine at Indiana University. Activities within the center include research, education, training, and service that benefit the institution as well as extramurally to state, national, and international communities. Housed within the Center for Toxicology is the Indiana State Department of Toxicology. The State Department of Toxicology is charged with the oversight of the scientific integrity and analysis of toxicological samples submitted from law enforcement organizations, coroners, and other entities. Also, the administration of Indiana University's Toxicology Ph.D. and master's programs within the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology are contained in the Center for Toxicology. These programs train graduate students as well as post doctoral students in fundamental toxicological sciences. Members of the Center for Toxicology are active in state, national, and international service including the following: National Toxicology Program Board of Scientific Advisors, US EPA scientific advisory board, and WHO International Agency for Research in Cancer Panels. The Center for Toxicology serves as a resource for training to the Indiana University School of Medicine and other entitites within the university, state, and international scientific commnity. Research within the Center for Toxicology focuses on studies on the mechanisms by which environmental agents, pharmaceuticals, and drugs of abuse produce toxic effects. The prime importance of these research activities is the understanding of the impact and risk assessment of toxic effects of these agents on humans.
