The Indiana University Russian and East European Institute administers
one of the country's largest programs in Russian and East European studies.
East European language training began at IU during World War II, and
REEI was founded in 1958. Since its earliest years, REEI's primary objective
has been to offer a broad interdisciplinary curriculum in advanced language
and area training, and to assist faculty and students in research and
the publication of scholarly works. REEI has long been a federally funded
National Resource Center, first under the National Defense Education
Act and later under Title VI of the Higher Education Act. REEI has also
received major research grants from the Ford and Mellon Foundations.
REEI graduates occupy important positions in academia, government, business,
and civic organizations in the United States, Eastern Europe, and the
former Soviet Union.
REEI programs emphasize the training of teacher scholars and professionals in fields such as government, business, journalism, law, public and environmental affairs, and library and information science. REEI currently administers an undergraduate minor (in two tracks), a graduate certificate, Ph.D. minor and a master's degree in Russian and East European studies. REEI also administers four dual degree programs with the Kelley School of Business (MA/MBA), School of Library and Information Science (MA/MLS, MA/MIS), and School of Public and Environmental Affairs (MA/MPA).
In addition to its training function, REEI promotes scholarly research. The Institute assists faculty and graduate students in obtaining funds for the writing and publication of Russian and East European area scholarship. REEI organizes workshops, seminars, and a lecture series; administers an outreach program; supports instructional development in language training; aids library collections development; and provides fellowships for graduate training in language and area studies.
