The Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention (RCAP), which began operation in 1994, is a joint project of Indiana University, University of Colorado Denver, and University of Kentucky. Headquartered at Indiana University, RCAP is largely funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The major focus of RCAP is the promotion of HIV/STD prevention in rural America, with the goal of reducing HIV/STD prevalence.
RCAP activities include:
1. Providing current prevention resources to professionals and the public that are applicable for rural communities
2. Developing and evaluating educational materials and approaches to rural HIV/STD prevention
3. Sharing strategies that might work to overcome behavioral and social barriers to rural HIV/STD prevention
4. Examining the behavioral and social factors related to individual HIV/STD prevention that can be applied to rural HIV/STD prevention programming
