The IUMSC is a research and service facility in the area of crystallography, and structural and materials chemistry. It has acquired an international reputation for its pioneering work in crystallographic techniques, including low temperature crystallography, three-dimensional visualization, and remote instrument access. Local equipment includes a dual source APEX Kappa system, a SMART6000 CCD instrument, an R-Axis imaging plate system, as well as powder and conventional four-circle diffractometers. In addition, the IUMSC operates the SCrAPS [http://www.iumsc.indiana.edu/synchrotron/scraps.html]program, which provides access to instruments at national laboratories including the Advance Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. The Center also established and continues to develop a distributed molecular structure database, the Reciprocal Net [http://www.reciprocalnet.org/], which is used at more than 20 laboratories in the U.S. and internationally. The Reciprocal Net is part of the National Science Digital Library [http://nsdl.org/] and provides educational material and cyber-learning modules to enhance Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and improve general scientific literacy.
