The Institute, established in 1983, has as its major goal the fostering of excellence in research in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, cell biology, developmental biology, molecular evolution, and evolutionary developmental biology. Institute Fellows include faculty members from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Anthropology, Physics, the Medical Sciences Program, the Program in Biochemistry, and the Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics, as well as a strong link to the Walther Cancer Institute in Indianapolis. There are currently sixty-six Fellows. The Institute has established technical facilities and resources, notably a DNA facility equipped with automated sequencers, an imaging facility with SEM, TEM, confocal, epiflourescence and deconvoluting microscopes, as well as mammalian and insect tissue culture facilities.
The Institute has moved to the newly renovated Myers Hall, a 65,000 square foot limestone building adjacent to Jordan Hall of Biology. The new facilities at Myers Hall will allow for expanded research efforts in a wide range of diciplines.
