The purpose of the Center for Archaeology in the Public Interest is to foster research and communication about the potential for sustainable exploitation of cultural resources all over the world. The importance of community development and education for both the future of archaeological research and the economic future of many disadvantaged areas is the focus of a newsletter: Public Archaeology Review. The objectives of the Center for Archaeology in the Public Interest are to: 1) promote awareness within the discipline of archaeology, as well as in the international anthropological community, of the impact of archaeological projects on people and culture in both the United States and in other nations 2) encourage archaeologists to discuss ethical standards of behavior and consider cross-cultural standards and 3) emphasize participation of local populations in the sustainable use of cultural resources.
