The mission of the Area 9 Agency is to assist older people and disabled
individuals in leading independent, meaningful, dignified lives in
their own homes and communities for as long as possible. This is accomplished
by establishing in-home and community services to assist clients in
remaining at home, thereby preventing premature nursing home placement.
A main objective is to prevent or delay nursing home placement if
at all possible. Student training in human services, nursing, and
public administration is provided under faculty-supervised research
opportunities. Direct services provided include case management, meals
on wheels, nursing home ombudsman, senior center programs, children's
services, information, and assistance to caregivers. Services provided
through contract agencies include: adult day care, respite care, homemaker,
attendant care, home health aid, health screenings, employment and
placement, legal assistance, transportation, and volunteer opportunities. A current research project is an Alzheimer's Disease Demonstration Grant using technology to assist caregivers (video monitoring and medical monitoring at off-site locations).
